Buckwheat Pillows – an Ancient Technology Enhancing the New

Buckwheat hull pillows were in use from two to three thousand years ago, and now they’re making a comeback. The newest technologies in sleeping are the air chamber mattresses where you can dial in your preferred “sleep number” which signifies the firmness you prefer at any given time, and the “memory foam” type mattress which uses your body heat to make the mattress conform to the shape of your body.

These new technologies work great for the mattresses, but not so great for the pillows, although they’re trying. The requirements and purposes of pillows are different than those for mattresses, and I believe a buckwheat pillow makes the perfect companion to the new technologies used in modern mattresses.

I think it’s really neat when you can combine the technicalities of civilizations thousands of years apart to accomplish the ultimate in sleeping comfort.

A Buckwheat Pillow for Your Valentine

Is your sweetheart someone who appreciates practical gifts? I realize that candy and red roses are the traditional Valentines Day gifts, but some people actually prefer to be practical – especially in these economic times when it’s wise to make dollars count in really practical ways.

You could kill two birds with one stone by putting a red rose on the white pillow – seems romantic to me. She would be able to enjoy her buckwheat pillow for years to come, considering their durability. The candy and roses will be gone and forgotten in days – well, hopefully not forgotten.

Of course you may be obligated to buy two, so that there are matching pillows on the bed,

This may not work for everyone, but you know your sweetheart better than I do. If you really have to, buy her the candy and roses for Valentines Day, and then really score points by giving her the buckwheat pillows a few days later.

                                                            Happy Valentines Day

The Buckwheat Pillow Challenge-Show Me a Better Pillow

It is quite natural for anyone to be very sceptical of something they know little or nothing about, or may, in fact, never even have heard of. Educating people to accept and appreciate new things sometimes requires an unconventional approach.

I hereby issue a challenge to one and all to show me a better pillow than a buckwheat pillow. You can’t just name some type of pillow – you must back it up with explanatory facts and reasons why any type of bed, travel, or neck pillow is superior to a comparable type of quality buckwheat pillow. One exception though. I’m excluding pillows used for pillow fighting.

May the best pillow win.

Quality Buckwheat Pillows – Their Characteristics

Like most other items being offered for sale, buckwheat pillows come in a wide range of qualities. And, as is true with most other items, you generally get what you pay for.

Many would-be purchasers of buckwheat pillows are at a disadvantage, because they are not really familiar with what makes a good quality buckwheat pillow versus an inferior quality pillow. Here are some suggestions to help identify a good, high quality, long lasting, buckwheat hull pillow.

It is important that it be made of organic, hypo-allergenic components, since you are going to be lying on it with your face or neck in contact with it, and breathing any toxins present all night long. Feathers and foam exude toxins from the pesticides, chemical cleaners, and vinyls used in them. You also want to be sure the buckwheat hulls have undergone a thorough triple vacuuming process to remove any traces of buckwheat flour and  foreign items from the hulls.

You will want to compare the size and weight of pillows in comparison with each other. The larger and heavier , the more size and filling you are getting for your money. You definitely need a discreetly sewn in nylon zipper to allow adjustment of the volume of hulls. This is a very important feature, as different people require different amounts of volume and malleability.

And finally, the quality of the pillow covering material and the stitching are very important to the longevity of the pillows. Remember that the general rule of disposing of pillows after six months of use due to dust mite infestation does not apply to buckwheat pillows as buckwheat hulls do not support dust mites as do foam and feathers.

The quality buckwheat pillow will cost more initially, but will definitely save you a lot of money in the long run. Happy dreams.

What Can I Expect the First Time I Sleep On a Buckwheat Pillow?

Everyone is different. The first time I slept on a buckwheat hull pillow, it took me probably 15 – 20 minutes to fall asleep, and I was actually surprised by the slight rustling-crunching sound of the hulls against each other, but it still only took me minutes to fall asleep. I was never bothered by it, and didn’t notice it again. It’s still there if I actually listen for it, but seems to be much fainter.

On the other hand, since we’ve been selling them, we’ve had 1 person who returned their pillow because they couldn’t get used to it, although they didn’t specify why.

The biggest difference though, is that people are used to a relatively thick pillow filled with feathers or foam, both of which compress. Buckwheat hulls do not compress. Your head and neck snuggle down into it, and it provides support relatively evenly everywhere that it is in contact, whereas feathers and foam compress and then provide the most pressure where they have been compacted the most. This is how the buckwheat hull pillow really out performs the feathers and foam.

However, to maximize this benefit, you need to adjust the volume of hulls so that your head and neck are supported at their natural configuration. Again, everyone is different. Some of us have long, limber necks. Others have shorter, thicker necks. Again, buckwheat pillows have the advantage of being easily adjusted to conform by simply removing or adding hulls to suit your particular requirements. This is easily accommodated by the nylon zipper hidden in the end of the buckwheat pillow.

What About Cooling or Freezing Buckwheat Pillows?

We have no reservations about refrigerating or freezing buckwheat hull pillows. Perhaps you want to have a cool pillow on a hot night, or maybe you suffer from a condition that could benefit from a cool pillow.

If your doctor or therapist recommends cold therapy to help with pain, swelling, or other conditions, you can simply put your buckwheat pillow in a refrigerator or freezer until it is cool enough for your purpose. If you forget and let it in longer than you had intended, there is no harm done. Cooling or freezing the buckwheat hulls will not harm them in any way.

They will retain their coolness for a considerable period of time, depending on how warm the room temperature is, the size and volume of the pillow, and how thoroughly it was cooled.

If your air conditioner goes on the blink, it would be helpful if you had a buckwheat pillow cooling in the freezer.

Well, What About Heating Buckwheat Pillows?

This is a frequently asked question, and there is not a clear cut answer. There are both pros and cons to heating buckwheat pillows.

A buckwheat pillow can be heated and used similarly to the way you would use an ordinary heating pad, except, of course, that the buckwheat pillow will eventually cool. That can be an advantage, as you don’t run the risk of falling asleep and letting the heating pad heat longer, and perhaps hotter, than you intended.

Then there are the safety concerns. We do not recomend ever heating one in a regular oven. If you use a microwave oven, only heat for a few seconds before checking the warmth, because buckwheat hulls heat very quickly in a microwave oven, and the heating speed varies so greatly from one microwave to another, that the question of safety should be obvious.

Also, the heating will quickly remove the natural moisture and oils from the hulls, and we believe that this will substantially shorten the life of the hulls. Our opinion is, that while there can be benefits from using a heated buckwheat hull pillow, we can not recomend it.

Pillows

If you are asked how well you slept last night, what would be your reply? We humans spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping, and it is necessary that we get the most comfortable rest we can every night. This ensures we are recharged enough to face another day ahead when morning comes. Get the adequate sleep you need by choosing your bed linens and pillows well.

For utmost comfort, use buckwheat pillows that contain 100% organic buckwheat hulls. They perfectly support the proper spinal curve of the head and neck thus providing relaxation of neck and shoulder muscles. While you sleep, your nerves will heal from all the irritation caused by stresses and strains from a long day at work. You can also use these against or under your back, hips, and wherever else you need comfortable support.
