QUALITY BUCKWHEAT PILLOW
I keep forgetting that buckwheat pillows are not as familiar to everyone as they are to me, as I’ve been sleeping on no other pillow for probably close to twenty years, but I’m one of the lucky ones. I don’t remember where, but somehow I heard about them, and mostly out of curiosity, I investigated them, and am so glad I did.
A short answer is that a buckwheat pillow is simply a pillow cover filled with buckwheat hulls.
However, you need a bit more information than that in order to make an informed decision regarding investing in your own buckwheat pillow, because if you were to buy a cheap imported one, you may well become disenchanted with buckwheat pillows, and that would be a shame.
Here are some features that you want to be sure are included in your buckwheat pillow.
- Triple vacuumed buckwheat hulls – necessary to remove all traces of flour and foreign matter in order to render the hulls hypoallergenic (a small percentage of people are allergic to buckwheat flour).
- A concealed nylon zipper in one end of the pillow to allow for adjusting the volume of hulls in the pillow. This is one of the biggest advantages of a buckwheat pillow, as it allows you to select your own particular comfort setting.
- Verification that the components of your pillow are 100% organic, to preclude the possibility of coming in contact with harmful residues from pesticides, herbicides, or other detrimental chemicals.
- A high quality pillow cover that will hold up for many years of use, because buckwheat pillows do not need replacing due to dust mite infestations, as do conventional pillows.
- Make sure your pillow is of the dimensions you would expect of the size pillow you want. In other words, a buckwheat queen size bed pillow should be basically the same dimensions as a conventional queen size bed pillow. Many cheap buckwheat pillows are of a disappointingly small size.
- Beware of pillows made using roasted buckwheat hulls. Roasting the hulls dries out the natural oils and shortens their life. The only reason for this is because federal law requires imported buckwheat hulls to be roasted to deter introduction of foreign insects or bacteria into the U.S.
If you abide by these guidelines, you can be assured of a buckwheat pillow that will give you many years of the most comfortable sleep that a pillow can provide.
